Toothbrush development process

Mar 02, 2022

Many ancient civilizations in the world have used twigs or small wood chips to rub their teeth. Another common method is to rub their teeth with baking soda or chalk. About 1,600 BC, toothbrushes with brown bristles appeared in India and Africa.

According to the American Dental Association, Emperor Xiaozong of the Ming Dynasty also had a toothbrush made of short, hard pig bristles inserted into a bone handle in 1498. The traditional Western method of cleaning teeth, which has been around since at least Roman times, is to rub the teeth with a rag. The toothbrush did not appear until the 17th century, and was not widely popular until the 19th century. In 1938, DuPont Chemical launched a toothbrush with synthetic fibers (mostly nylon) instead of animal bristles. The first toothbrush with nylon yarn as bristles was launched on February 24 of that year.

The first electric toothbrush, called "the Broxodent", was developed by (Philippe-G. WOOG, Ph. D. Toulouse University) in 1954 and introduced by Squibb Pharmaceutical on the centenary of the American Dental Association in 1959 .

When brushing your teeth, you usually add toothpaste to your toothbrush or use floss to clean your teeth.

In January 2003, according to the Lemelson-MIT Invention Index, the toothbrush was selected as the first "indispensable invention in American life", beating out the automobile, personal computer, portable Telephone and microwave.
